Assault Course

No one ever told you life in the army would be easy. The Assault Course Combat Academy is probably the most challenging and realistic combat training simulator.
You?ll experience real pain as you are forced up against a range of gruelling obstacles: water jumps, razor-wire, monkey bars, the log challenge, twelve foot walls and the rope swings. If you fail you?ll be peeling spuds in the mess tent for the next 3 weeks, so polish your boots, put on your fatigues and kick some mud.

Graphics

Assault Course is kind of like an olympic game such as Daley Thompsons Decathlon only it?s all in one go and the event never changes locations. Graphics are rich and colourful with some very nice backgrounds, notice however that it never changes even though you are running along, the rocks in the background never move or change (visible in the screen grabs below). Our main character looks like he was pulled from the karate classic IK+ which is no bad thing by any stretch of the imagination but considering you are meant to be in the army this should strike you as a little odd. Graphics wise Assault Course certainly beats the ZX Spectrum version hands down as at least in our version we have some colours on offer and the character doesn?t disappear in the background.

Sound

Sound is like the graphics, on top form. We have a pretty cool introduction theme to start off with which is then followed by more music before the actual training begins, after this you?ll hear the occasional footstep noise and collisions with the floor noises. Okay it?s not over the top sound but what do you expect from a game of this genre? we certainly didn?t expect much and were pleasantly surprised by this one.

Gameplay

Gameplay is actually a little better than some other olympic/sport style games as even though you have to tap the left and right keys as in other titles you don?t have to do it half as fast. In fact if you hit the keys at a rapid rate you?ll notice that the speed bar hardly gets past the first hurdle, odd I know and it baffled us at first but at least it?s easier on your wrists or your joysticks.
Providing you time your running pace and hit the fire button at the right time you shouldn?t have a problem completing the course but the 1 minute 25 second time you are set to beat is a little tough, I know it wouldn?t be much of a game if it was larger but some players (including us) will have a problem at first beating that time as you spend the first minute of the game trying to get to grips with the running pace and timing of the fire button. All in all though it?s certainly not a bad game and one we suggest trying out if you have the Daley Thompson series, considering the budget price and label it?s pretty good.
