Did you forget about the first Street Fighter game? or haven?t you ever thought about it since the big fuss over the Street Fighter 2 series that was released in the 1990?s - a considerable time after the original.

The story is the same as the first game but this time only focusing on one character, Ryu, the kickboxer from the US. You have entered one of the largest tournaments on earth and must battle your way through many strong opponents who are just as good as you and some are even better, the prize is being the biggest and best fighter in the world along with a large sum of money - the price? your health.

Developed by Capcom and distributed by Go! (obvisouly before Capcom became the software giants they are today) in 1988 this is the very first in the long running and highly successful series of beat-em-ups but is it as high paced, action packed or as playable as the sequel that followed?

Lets find out shall we?

Graphics

Yep thats right, this is the very first Street Fighter game by the mighty software giants Capcom and before you go downloading the game there are some major differences that may shade your judegment. In this game you cannot chose your fighter, you are Ryu and that?s that! you cannot chose your location because there is no map and your combat moves are not as high paced as the sequel.

The graphics in this game are very good indeed, this is perhaps one of the better beat-em-ups on the Amstrad CPC and it sure wasn?t going to get a lot better in the future. Capcom have used as many colours as they can in the levels of the game, your character and your opponent have been very well drawn and it all looks very good indeed.

Sound

Sound is a let down however, you don?t have any kicking soundtrack like the one found in the sequel, there is little to know sound in the game itself other than the occasional thud. Don?t go expecting any speach in this game either because it was developed in 1988 and sound sampling was limited to just about 2 seconds back then - plus it didn?t sound so good through the computers of that time.

Gameplay

Gameplay is okay, it?s certainly a lot better than the Spitting Image beat-em-up by Domark. It?s a little slow to anyone that has been playing the sequels for the past few years but what do you expect for a computer and game of this age. Combat moves are again limited in the original game however so don?t expect to be throwing any sonic booms across the screen because it?s not possible and the fact that you cannot select a character like you can in the sequel might put a few players off. True retrogamers however must download and try this classic.
