Oh Mummy was another of the highly playable free games that Amsoft provided with the Amstrad CPC 464, it was also released by Sinclair for the ZX Spectrum but whether or not it was free I don?t know.

The ancient magic of the Pharoahs of Egypt, awaits those who would dare to desecrate their tombs, disturbing their slumber. Hoards of riches are to be found, if you have the courage to face the Guardians of the Pyramid!

That is all the information the makers of the game (Gem Software) gave away in the inlay card but this is essentially Tomb Raider before Lara Croft came along and everything simply had to be done in 3D using the highest end PC computers to run it. Oh Mummy has gone down well in the history of the CPC alone and it is dying for a remake to be made by some talented coder (hint hint).

Graphics

While the design of this game is pretty basic it still remains one of the most addictive CPC games out there, it?s twice as much fun as Tomb Raider and after the recent mega sequel releases I should imagine that a 2D approach to a game with the same premise should be welcome.

The graphics are great in this game, although the levels are as basic as you would like to go. Your character is well drawn and animated, the mummies that come out of the tombs to attack you are very funny indeed and there has been a great use of colour throughout the game - certainly when you consider that it was coded in 1984.

Sound

Sound is as good as we can expect from a game of this age, Gem have thrown in the option to either have the music and sound effects or disable one of them. The "in the german nick" type song has been well and truly tracked for the start of the game and throughout the entire set of levels, so if you get annoyed by looping music I suggest you take advantage of the option to disable it. There are little bits of ingame sound when you discover items in the tombs and when you loose a life too.

Gameplay

Gameplay is great, it?s another addictive game that you paid absolutely nothing for. The basic aim is to walk around the maze leaving tracks behind you and uncover the treasures that lay inside each of the tombs. Be warned though you need to find the key before you can escape and the faster the game goes the more difficult it gets.
