Buggy Boy was an arcade smash hit and there can be no doubt about that, I must admit that the first time I played this game was on the C64 conversion of the game closely followed by the Atari ST version. The idea of the game is much the same as any racer, ride around various locations in your beach buggy and try to collect as many points via the various checkpoints on your way, oh and one last thing - don?t forget to hit the beach ball on your way around otherwise you could be here for weeks, or at least until your time runs out.

Graphics

As I openly admited in the introduction to this game I first played Buggy Boy on the C64 and now that I have the chance to compare the CPC version in full colour against the memories of the C64 version I can honestly say that the graphics in the CPC conversion are almost if not spot-on accurate to most other conversions.

The track is laid out nicely and is perfectly copied from the original arcade game with no major changes being made, colours are nice and strong plus like the level design itself they remain pretty faithful to the original coin-op. There are no bugs in the game that would make you get frustrated during play and nothing to stop you from enjoying this wonderful arcade hit.

The only thing we did notice, and this is not a problem only in the CPC version, is that once your buggy goes underneath a bridge in the top half of the screen are no longer visible until you come out the other side, surely this could have been addressed but sadly it remained. Not a huge problem though as the game is still an arcade smash hit.

Sound

Buggy Boy has all the sounds you may have heard in other conversions and of course everything from the classic arcade with perfect results. There are little hints of music before each race and plenty of in-game effects to make that game that little bit more enjoyable, Elite Systems Ltd live up to the reputation here at CPC Zone and provide another quality conversion.

Gameplay

Anyone that has missed out on this classic title should without any doubt grab a copy of this game on any system you wish and give it a go. The game is pure entertainment and keeps you coming back for more, sure it might look a little dated but then again so does the original arcade by todays standards.

All the thrills and spills of the arcade and C64 versions have been converted to the worlds best 8-bit machine with no problems at all, highly recommended!
