Another text adventure for the 10s of fans that actually enjoy playing them, while popular in the day I highly doubt that replay value is still high on most of them. Book Of The Dead takes on the ever popular evil side of life and death and sits you firmly in the middle of an eary town were nothing is predictable.

Graphics

Unlike many adventure games on the CPC it appears that CRL put a little bit of effort into this one with almost every screen containing some kind of illustration, while they are far from superiour they still easily walk all over the poor attempts that Level 9 computing have made over the years. Appart from the odd still image in basic colours we are simply treated to the standard enter a command style interface. Nothing new at all, sadly.

Sound

Sound is non existant, well at least during our 15 minutes of gameplay we heard nothing. This is one game that you could easily play without turning the speakers up. Text Adventures often need something to break the standard but in this case it appears we have been let down yet again, coded in the late 80?s you would be forgiven for expecting some kind of blip but sadly there?s nothing at all in this one.

Gameplay

The Book Of The Dead is a fairly simple adventure with only a few puzzles popping up here and there to tax your brain, the rest is simply typing N/W/E/S into the text area and picking up objects. It?s far from being an easy adventure but it?s all a long way from being the massively entertaining story we had all wished for.

This is yet another text adventure that will only appeal to those who like this genre of gaming, we are unlikely to see this kind of game again so make the most of it.
