Isometric 3D was a common technic to feature some sort of 3D environment with a 2D display.

Yet it can actually be considered a 3D engine as it allows to move and act in a 3 axis environment (X,Y,Z).

This was also often used with tactical games (See Heroquest, Space crusade)

More recently (sort of) it was used in games such as Syndicate (by Bullfrog) on 16bit machines.

On of the most notable exemple on Amstrad CPC is Head Over Heels hit game.
