Extended RAM Software

This article deals with software that actually uses the Extra RAM banks as featured in the CPC6128 or Amstrad 6128Plus, or any 464 or 664 settings with Standard Memory Expansions.

The title of this article is open to debates and may be changed once a proper term is found.

HISTORY IN THE MAKING

Common Beliefs

If one discounts the short-lived CPC664, the Amstrad home computer range is usually divided between the 464 (64KB of memory) and the 6128 (128KB). This leaves lots of users with only 64KB of memory. The downside for everyone was that, because the developers would choose to publish games for the lowest common denominator, very few titles took advantage of the upper 64KB bank of the 6128 model.

There were, however, several titles that took advantage of the full 128KB of memory, both commercially released or scene-related.

Modern Scene production

  1. RickDangerous 128+ was released for 128K machines, causing several 464Plus users to complaint, in an ironic repeat of history.
  2. StarSabre also lead to some debate wether it should be only 64K or get a better 128K version. In the end, one was released as well.

The debate continues on whether a production should use even more than 128k of RAM or not.
